More and more car models are moving away from the classic three door coupe and towards estates and five door cars. London X City, a UK based online magazine, has released a new post looking at whether the proverbial final nail in the coffin has been placed for the three door coupe motorcar. They also ask whether this development of moving away from smaller vehicles is a good thing or not.

London X City Editor Chloe explains: "More and more three door coupe models are disappearing from our roads and, more notably, from the showrooms. They are basically stalwarts and we are interested on whether they will survive and still be available in the future. But this also concerns us, particularly from an environmental perspective. After all, three door coupes are smaller and are therefore more energy efficient."

Unfortunately, all the available proof points to a simple conclusion, which is that the three door coupe has seen its last days. Indeed, all over the automotive industry, manufacturers are dropping the three door model. This is particularly true in the UK, where drivers now want vehicles that are practical. According to London X City, the main concern is that manufacturers forget to also take environmental issues into consideration as they drop their smaller coupe models and move towards the grand coupes instead. Those interested to find out more about this development can check the London X City website.

Seat, a sister company of Volkswagen, recently announced that they would discontinue their SC, a sportier body than the one found as standard on the Seat Leon. Additionally, all three door vehicles it still had in the showrooms in the United Kingdom are currently heavily discounted. Chloe explains: "This sale needs to be seen for what it is: a sell off. They want to make sure that the showrooms have spaces available for the bigger cars and that they aren't cluttered with vehicles people won't buy anyway."

For some time, it was believed that the reason the three door coupe was struggling was because people were only interested in SUVs. However, London X City says it now seems that it is in effect because of the number of doors. The Range Rover Evoque, for instance, is an example of an SUV that has had to be dropped as a result of poor sales, simply because it only had three doors.

Chloe continues: "The evidence is mounting up. Just recently, the Seat Mii was taken out of production and Volkswagen stopped producing the Scirocco and the highly popular Beetle. Both the Up and the Polo remain available but will not be continued and even the A3 has now disappeared. Meanwhile, the Volkswagen Golf and the Audi A1 have stopped producing three door versions, meaning that they are now only available in estate and five door versions. Finally, the Skoda Citigo is expiring and Skoda has announced that they will be releasing a brand new model instead."

The full list of three door vehicles that have been discontinued or are about to be taken out of production is available on the London X City website. This includes the Astra GTC, one of Vauxhall's most handsome three door vehicles. Furthermore, Kia has announced that their three door Proceed, which is a smaller version of the Ceed, will be changed into a five door vehicle as well. This is a clear example of the now more popular grand coupe.

Of interest is the fact that some top of the range three door coupes will continue to exist. Chloe explains: "So far, we know that the Range Rover SV Coupe will continue to be available in its sleek three door version. However, that is a car that the vast majority of the public will never be able to afford. On a personal note, we are sad to see the three door models go away. They are accessible, perfect for driving in the city, and good for younger drivers as well. The roads are crowded enough as it is, so whether there really is any need for more five door vehicles is something we are questioning."

Each year, significant changes take place within the automotive industry. However, this is the first time the change has been so large and across so many different makes of vehicles. This shows a clear shift in the industry as a whole. Generally speaking, car manufacturers will only make such significant changes if there is an equally significant change in demand. London X City is asking whether that has been the case this time, as they don't understand why so many people have lost interest in the sleek three door coupe.
