Lionel Smit art for saleLOS ANGELES -- Art Life, an online gallery that focuses on contemporary art, is proud to announce that they now have a number of original and exclusive pieces of Lionel Smit art for sale. As part of the collection, the gallery features both sculptures and silk screens. Prices are available on request.

"This particular artist was born in 1982 in Pretoria, South Africa and is best known for his contemporary portraiture executed through monumental canvases and sculptures," says Art Life founder Avery Andon. "Perhaps more than anything else, this artist's art is defined by a deeply rooted symbiotic relationship between sculpture and painting."

The works of Lionel Smit are depicted either in paint or in bronze. He used a blend of different techniques and genres, overlapping different types of media. When creating a painting, Smit starts by creating a base of swaths of color and abstract lines, above which he places a bust or face image. These tend to be from women from Cape Malay in South Africa.

Andon continues: "For Smit, the Cape Malay woman epitomizes hybrid identity within a South African context, and reflects the disintegrating construction of identity within our increasingly globalized world. His work is loaded with both historical and aesthetic precedent; clearly focused on the dialogue between the figurative and expressive abstract."

Through bronze, Smit translates his paintings into tangible sculptures. He uses lost wax casting, which is the oldest type of casting known to man. Uniquely, Smit is a lover of color, which is why he creates bronze works that move away from the green, black, and brown and include saturated patinas instead, with streaks of greens and blues.

The online gallery Art Life is proud to be able to offer original Lionel Smit pieces that can't be found anywhere else. Smit is a global artist with various sold out exhibitions, but he remains a South African at heart and prefers to remain in that country. His works have gained international acclaim over the past decade or so, with the Delaire Graff Wine Estate, Laurence Graff Art Collection, and the Standard Chartered Bank all collecting his works.
