Augusto Beato expects a fun-filled night when Courtney Freed provides a jazz-styled tribute to the late Queen singer Freddie Mercury on Wednesday, April 4, at CoHo Theater.
"Freed is a belter and she does justice to the power of Freddie Mercury's singing," said Beato.
The one-woman, jazz-styled musical biography is entitled "Don't Stop Me Now: The Freddie Mercury Experience". Freed said it's ripe for a female voice because he's calling in this diva when he's singing this music."
Growing up, Portland-born Freed says she was riveted by the voice of the artist who morphed from shy Farrokh Bulsara to flamboyant Freddie Mercury once he began performing.
Freed, who teaches voice instruction at Resound NW music studio, has performed in book musicals in Chicago and around the Northwest, creating her cabaret gigs in between for piano bars including Wilfs in Portland.
She frequently rounds up other artists for her "Portland Sings!" concert series.
Portraying a sort of secret muse to Mercury, Freed will usher audiences from his childhood in Zanzibar and India, through his musical influences and stage performances, to his death in 1991 from AIDS-related pneumonia.
Musical arranger Reece Marshburn suggested a 1930s Germany, Weimar-culture vibe for "Don't Stop Me Now." That synced with information Freed discovered in a Mercury biography: The rocker was a huge fan of Liza Minnelli and the song "Killer Queen" was very likely inspired by Minnelli's performance as Sally Bowles in the film "Cabaret," which is set in 1931 Berlin.
A 20th Century Fox's Queen biopic, "Bohemian Rhapsody," scheduled for release this Christmas.
