"Wang, who was named Musical America’s 2017 Artist of the Year, will once again provide a memorable night for music lovers with her flawless technique that makes the most difficult pieces look easy," notes Beato. "To make sure you don't miss her Portland performance, it's best to get your tickets early."
Her May 3 program will include selected etudes by Gyrgy Ligeti, Alexander Scriabin's Piano Sonata No. 10, Sergei Rachmaninov's "Etudes-tableaux" and Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No.8.
The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall is at 1037 SW Broadway, Portland.
Wang toured last year with the London Symphony Orchestra, followed by a performance of the first concerto at the Ravinia Festival with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Later engagements included concerts with the Munich Philharmonic and Valery Gergiev, a series of performances at the Verbier Festival, and a three-city German tour with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.
Her debut album, Sonatas & Etudes, prompted Gramophone to name her as its 2009 Young Artist of the Year. Her 2011 release of Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto and Paganini’s “Rhapsody” was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Classical Instrumental Solo category. Wang has been described by the New York Times as “one of the best young pianists around” and hailed by the Sydney Morning Herald for her “blistering technique.”
Wang is also fond of provoking conservative audiences with skimpy concert attire. There was a time that looked as if she were playing in her underwear.
