February 09, 2018 - PRESSADVANTAGE -
Sarah James, known for her jazz singing in and around the New York area and her recordings on the Kilamanjaro Jazz label, will be bringing her trio to the Kitano Hotel in New York City on February 28, 2018. Featuring John DiMartino on the piano, Leo Traversa on bass and Vince Cherico, James will be performing a combination of original material and songs from the Great American Songbook, as well as blues and funk material.
A stylist who combines her natural instinct for singing beautiful melodies with an eclectic approach to creating compositional art songs as well as blues and funk, her approach is a welcome addition to the contemporary jazz vocalist offerings.
Originally from Brooklyn NY, Ms. James grew up steeped in the sounds of Frank Sinatra, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith and bluesmen Huddie Leadbetter, Robert Johnson and Brownie McGee.
Her father was a New York City police detective who loved traditional jazz, brought home many recordings of big bands and bebop artists. Her mother was a correctional officer for the New York City Dept of Correction and exposed her to the great vocalists of the jazz world at an early age. As a young person, she sang in choirs, on street corners, small ensembles, theatre productions, and class plays.
Piano lessons at age 10, guitar, saxophone and flute, composition studies give her a strong foundation in the fundamentals of musical performance. With a legacy of over 15 recordings on her own recording label, KilamanjaroJazz.com, she brings a wealth of experience to the stage.
Rooted firmly in the jazz world, her compositions include traditional forms, blues, and more extended forms. An unpublished poet, she has over 20 “chapbooks”. Her connection to poetry informs her music and the two intertwine.
The performance February 28, 2018, at Kitano NYC will be a CD release event celebrating the release of her new CD "Eastern Standard Time".
She has been performing regularly at The Stony Hill Inn with The Betty Liste Trio in Hackensack, NJ for 13 years once or twice a month. The venue is a rare throwback to the nightclub days of music, dining, and dancing. It features excellent Italian American cuisine, a good size dance floor and an upscale casual ambiance.
Although not a jazz club, The Stony Hill Inn does give an audience a wide selection of musical entertainment from the 20’s to today’s sounds. Singing contemporary music and relating to an audience with a diverse palette of songs, has been a great resource for Ms. James and she draws on that experience whenever she performs.
CD's of the new project: "Eastern Standard Time" will be available at event.
