A new article published online by Bariatric Mexico Surgery offers a look into the specifics regarding men and bariatric surgery. Traditionally, women were the ones who chose this surgery as a means of losing weight and getting healthier. The article takes a look at why there is such a low percentage of men who opt for this type of surgery and explains some of the reasoning behind these statistics.

"Traditionally, body image has always been something that women fret over more than men," says Alma Orozco with Bariatric Mexico Surgery. "This is despite the obesity rates being equal for both genders. In fact, nearly 80 percent of all bariatric surgeries scheduled are those for women."

The article, which can be seen at https://www.bariatricmexicosurgery.com/why-is-there-a-low-percentage-of-men-getting-bariatric-surgery.html, quotes a study that was done in 2015 by the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. The study identified the demographic and cultural factors that are responsible for this gender disparity.

"200,000 bariatric patients between 1998 and 2010 were studied," says Orozco. "Several factors were quoted as being at the cause of the disparity, including insurance coverage, health awareness, surgery eligibility, and again, perception of body image."

Orozco says that body image perception is a major factor in why women choose this surgery more than men. According to the article, income and race also play a factor as researchers found that there are higher percentages of women than men who opt for this surgery in counties that show lower median incomes, as well as in certain ethnicities. Studies also show that women often choose surgical solutions for weight loss and overall health earlier in life, which could also point to body image perception. Men wait until they are older, which is typically when they begin experiencing things that could eliminate them from surgical eligibility, such as high blood pressure and heart disease. Recently however, this gap has begun to narrow, with a 70 to 30 percent split between women and men who are opting for this surgery.
