Calgary, Canada based premium nutritional supplements company Nutriden Inc. has released new information on the optimal amount of sleep required by people as a part of its insomnia and sleep awareness campaign.

Not many people take the amount of sleep they get seriously unless they have a chronic sleep issue. Research shows that even one night of missed sleep can have a negative impact on one's health. Says Tom Schumlich, CEO of Nutriden, “Never mess with your sleep cycle, as it will always do more harm than good. Chronic sleep issues can lead to a myriad of problems, including mental instability - not something anyone would want to risk.”

According to the National Sleep Foundation, some of the critical roles of sleep include consolidating memories, growing muscles, repairing tissues, and synthesizing hormones. All of these functions require long uninterrupted sleep, a lack of which can lead to forgetfulness and slow healing, among other things. While researchers are still studying how sleep works and all of its benefits, the core truth - that humans need a proper amount of sleep to be healthy - is proven time and time again.

Knowing how much sleep one needs starts with knowing the impact of not getting the right amount of sleep. A sleep deprived person has difficulty with memory and moodiness, they have a hard time concentrating, they can become paranoid, and can even have hallucinations if the lack of sleep goes on for more than a few days. While some believe that they can make up their sleep the next night or by taking a nap during the day, the fact remains that sleep cannot be accumulated.

Healthy sleep is critical for everyone since not getting enough sleep or dealing with disrupted sleep can lead to weight gain, diabetes, heart trouble, and more. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults get anything between 7 to 9 hours of undisturbed sleep every night with a normal healthy person taking around 15 minutes to fall asleep. If one requires more than 30 minutes to fall asleep, a natural sleep aid or other forms of sleep therapy should be used.
