Calgary, Canada: Nutriden Inc, a company that manufactures high-quality nutritional supplements, is launching a new awareness campaign to help people understand osteoporosis, its various causes, and available treatments.
The National Osteoporosis Foundation defines osteoporosis as a bone disease that occurs when the body loses too much bone mass thus increasing the chances of broken bones, especially among the elderly. The condition can be debilitating to the extent that bones can break not just from a serious fall but also from sneezing and even minor bumps. Literally, the term means 'porous bones'.
Tom Schumlich, CEO of Nutriden Inc says, “We are excited to announce our campaign on educating women of the impacts of osteoporosis and what it can mean for their bodies. One thing that surprised us is the correlation between the occurrence of osteoporosis and gum disease.” This connection was discovered in a study conducted at the University at Buffalo where a sample of 1400 postmenopausal women was used to investigate the correlation between osteoporosis and periodontal i.e. gum disease. It was revealed that women with over 200 milligrams of bone density loss have 86% higher chances of developing periodontal disease implying a direct correlation between the two diseases.
However, this also makes for some good news as another study conducted at Buffalo University has found out that treatment of osteoporosis via estrogen therapy has a positive effect in preventing periodontal diseases as well. The study revealed that postmenopausal women undergoing estrogen therapy for osteoporosis are 44% less likely to develop periodontal diseases as compared to women who haven't undergone estrogen therapy.
Frank Scannapieco, DMD, Ph.D., co-author on the study, and professor and chair of the Department of Oral Biology in the UB School of Dental Medicine stated, "These results help confirm the findings of previous studies that suggested that estrogen therapy to prevent osteoporosis could also play a role in the prevention of gum disease. By advancing our understanding of how this treatment can impact oral health, we can better work to improve the bone health and quality of life of female patients."
While estrogen therapy provides such unexpectedly positive results, the fact remains that hormone therapy has shown to cause adverse effects such as increasing the risk of heart diseases and breast cancer among women. Care should be taken before committing to any medical procedure for taking any of these treatments.
