Anchorage, Alaska, July 9, 2017 - Stress is an unavoidable part of nearly everyone’s daily life, contributing to health problems from insomnia to high blood pressure. While many people are aware of this, not everyone knows that stress can also affect one’s oral health and possibly require a visit to the dentist in Anchorage.

An Anchorage dentist has seen patients dealing with stress who are also suffering from bruxism, or habitual jaw clenching and grinding of the teeth. People who are tense or stressed out are more likely to clench their jaw or grind their teeth, leading to a sore jaw and worn teeth. In some cases, people who grind their teeth do not even know they are doing it because it occurs during sleep.

A similar ailment brought on by stress that affects oral health is temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD. This affects the jaw and other muscles that are involved in moving the neck and jaw and can lead to jaw popping or clicking, headaches, joint pain, and jaw clenching.

Stress has been proven to weaken one’s immune system, this includes fighting oral infections. In times of stress some people develop painful canker sores or have an increased chance of contracting gum disease. Dry mouth can be another side effect of stress, and people with dry mouth are more likely to get cavities.

Dr. Terry Preece is a dentist in Anchorage, AK who has noticed the way stress has affected the oral health of some of his patients and suggests that it is important to maintain good oral hygiene even during times of stress. Call Healthy Smiles Dental at (907)341-3139 to speak with Dr. Preece or a staff member.
