Nutriden Sleep Formula Contains L-Theanine (Amino Acid in Green Tea)

As part of the company launching into the marketplace, Nutriden is launching its new Sleep aid formula for people who have trouble sleeping and can't wait to benefit from the quality ingredients, such as L-theanine, used to aid in getting a good night’s sleep and being able to still perform safely the next day.

L-theanine is an amino acid found in green tea. L-theanine increases alpha wave activity in the brain and this type of brain wave is associated with the most relaxed sleep state.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) recognizes L-theanine as a “GRAS” (Generally Recognized As Safe) substance, which has lead many people to use it safely for decreasing generalized anxiety, for stress reduction, and for reducing the severity of insomnia.

According to a research study on L-theanine’s effect on mental state by Nobre, Rao, and Owen (2008) L-theanine’s effect on the brain can be visualized on an EEG. Brain waves are actually smoothed out by L-theanine. The body is relaxed, the mind is calmed, but no drowsiness occurs making it a safer option than prescribed sleeping pills to use for sleep enhancement. Additionally, according to Dr. Rubman (Naturopathic Doctor), there is also no evidence that L-theanine can become addictive as many sleeping pills can.

Most “sleeping pills” are problematic due to side effects and dependence. Taking sleeping pills has been associated with next-day increased risk for motor vehicle accidents and/or related accidents operating heavy machinery. Due to this increased next-day safety risk, many have turned to natural sleep aids like L-theanine. Another study published in 2015 investigated the effect of L-theanine on sleep. The results of this study suggest taking L-theanine may enhance sleep quality via a non-sedating anxiolytic effect. In plain language, it reduces anxiety, promotes alpha brain waves, and allows people that are stressed to sleep without adverse next-day side effects.

Advantages of using L-theanine over traditional sleeping pills is that L-theanine doesn’t cause next-day drowsiness. Researchers noted that doses up to 2000 mg per day produced no significant adverse effects.

The company says that L-Theanine is a great option for people who understand that a safe, next day should follow a good night’s sleep.
