The Pet Spa by Soap.Club, a natural pet shampoo supplier based in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, addresses the trend in designer dog breeds and dispels some of the myths associated with them.

Pet lovers in search of a hybrid dog breed known as a ‘Designer Breed’, may be taken aback by the choices available to them. The International Designer Canine Registry ® (IDCR) currently lists 614 different designer dog breeds. A few of the more popular in the world are:

Cockapoo – A cross between a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle, Shorkie Tzu – A cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and Shih Tzu, Labradoodle – A cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, Bully Pit – A cross between an American Bull Dog and American Pit Bull Terrier, and Cavachon – A cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Bichon Frise.

Jack Widmer, Pet Spa manager says, “The main reason a new pet parent goes in search of a hybrid/designer breed is that they want to combine various desirable physical traits of the two breeds that have been crossed into one pet. Another important characteristic of designer dogs is that they are bred to be companion dogs”.

There are, however, a few misconceptions related to designer breeds that should be addressed. Popular myths include:

Only the desirable traits of the parents will be prevalent in the puppy. While true that the attractive and popular qualities emerge in the young, it is just as possible that some of the worst genetic traits of their purebred parents may surface. There is no assurance that the new puppy not will have some of both.

Hybrids are healthier than their purebred parents. It is often thought that a broader gene pool gives the hybrids a vigor greater than that found in the purebred parents. But, as successive generations are bred the health problems also increase, with offspring that tend to carry the same genetic vulnerabilities of the parents. For instance; reportedly 90% of dogs suffer from unbalanced PH and zinc deficiencies which are a major cause of skin irritation. Widmer advises that in these situations “The Pet Spa Hypoallergenic Pet Shampoo And Conditioner promotes the healing of dry, damaged skin and hair for dogs”.

The hybrids are hypoallergenic. There is no truth to the assumption that a dog is allergen-free just because he has been a product of two purebred dogs that are prone to minimal shedding. They still produce certain allergens that more sensitive people can react to.
