A new study to alleviate cervicogenic headaches has shown that there are alternative methods to medication. Cervicogenic headaches in children have been historically treated with botox and other medication. This study, however, shows that a new treatment method has potential to be safer and more effective.

Dr. Tymothy L. Flory with Atlas Spinal Care in Upland, California says, "Studies indicate that a gentle realignment of the neck can help to significantly relieve the pain associated with these types of headaches."

Dr. Flory is referencing a research study that involved an eight year old girl with neck pain and cervicogenic headaches. The child's mother reported that the girl suffered with pain for more than four months, at a consistency of two or more headaches per week. Tylenol was recommended, but was not effective. Gentle spinal adjustments, however, were applied and the girl's condition was resolved.

The patient received gentle structural correction of her cervical spine. After four appointments, her neck pain and headaches were gone. The case study presents hope that chiropractic care for children with these issues can be a very effective form of treatment, and one that does not require over the counter or prescription medications.

"Conventional treatment for children with this medical issue involves botox or giving them Tylenol PRN or another prescription medication," says Dr. Flory. "Parents and physicians alike would like to avoid this type of treatment in children, particularly younger children, and simply treat the issue with something that is not laden with potentially negative side effects."

Atlas Spinal Care specializes in structural correction of the head and neck and has successfully cared for many patients with headaches stemming from the neck. The practice urges parents to consider this alternative to conventional treatment as a means of helping to alleviate neck and headache pain in children, as it is a natural approach and in most cases can be more effective than medication. Dr. Flory states that his practice has seen many children permanently relieved of these types of headaches.
