TheProductLawyers.com announces developments in a lawsuit filed against Xarelto and its manufacturers by an Ohio couple. The suit alleges that the anticoagulant created and distributed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Bayer AG caused the woman to develop severe health issues, including an intestinal bleed and anemia.
The FDA passed approval for Xarelto in 2011. While the drug was initially hailed as a new-generation breakthrough in the field of anticoagulant medication, it has since attracted more than 3,000 lawsuits seeking damages. The uses for which it was originally approved included treatment of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and the prevention of postoperative clot formation in those recuperating from knee or hip replacement surgeries. Soon after, the approval scope was expanded to include the drug as a preventative against strokes in individuals with the cardiac disorder, atrial fibrillation.
In this case, the woman began taking the drug as a part of a treatment regimen for atrial fibrillation. In only two months, she began experiencing difficulties resulting from an uncontrollable bleeding event. The couple seeks more than $150,000 to settle medical expenses as a result of this bleeding event, the subsequent anemia, and a host of other related factors that prevent her from leading a full life.
Recently, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation ordered the agglomeration of all federally-filed suits against Xarelto and its manufacturers under the heading of a multidistrict litigation (MDL 2592). It is slated to be tried in the Eastern District of Louisiana under Judge Eldon Fallon, and the suit filed by the Ohio couple will be included.
Many of the claimants have similar allegations and claim they were placed in unwarranted danger of catastrophic bleeding episodes as a result of using Xarelto. As the litigation moves towards trial, plaintiffs are optimistic that additional suits will join the effort.
