It was only a little over a week to go until the Fight of the Century when details were finally set in stone. After years of waiting, the Mayweather-Pacquaio fight is official. On April 21, Top Rank producer Bob Arum went public about an unsigned contract, and that failure to do so was caused by Mayweather Promotions’ deviation from discussions on signatories. The deal was finally sealed on Wednesday, as anticipation grew over the lack of paper tickets in the market. Fans started to get antsy as many have booked hotel reservations on the Las Vegas strip. Paper tickets were only released a week before the fight on Thursday and was gobbled up as soon as it hit the market, selling out in minutes, setting another world record in the history of all boxing fights.
At the same time, a press conference via phone was shortlived as technical difficulties causes Bob Arum to declare the discontinuation of the press con, leaving media personnel with unanswered questions. Even media passes were withheld until a week prior to the fight, with no assurances of which journalists will get to cover the most coveted fight live. To add to the chaos, word has it that Pacquiao’s camp has decided not to let the Filipino champ participate in the Grand Arrival ceremony, a tradition long followed by massive boxing matches.
Albeit disorganized, the most awaited fight of the century continues to break record after record. Perhaps it is precisely the challenges and delays that make the fight so in-demand, as both fans and non-fans await the biggest battle to take place in this generation.
Other unprecedented milestones include hitting the USD $300-400 million mark in revenue, USD $13.2 of which comes from sponsorships. Previous records for sponsorships are only a quarter of this amount. This supersedes even the Super Bowl, which earned an average of USD 71.
Ticket reselling has reported to reach a whopping USD141,000, with only a five hundred and one thousand available for public consumption. Within approximately 60 seconds, all were gone and sold. Tickets were initially on sale for USD 1,500 and USD $7,500 but will balloon once it hits the resale market. Other sources of revenue will come from closed circuit viewing ranging at about USD $300 per viewing, pay-per-view at USD $1, and sponsorships and merchandise.
The Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight has long been anticipated, with over 5 years of delay as both parties negotiatied and re-negotiated over sales and billing. Many critics believe the fight is happening half a decade too late, but both camps believe the time is just right, as both are more mature fighters.
Is all the hype, delays and build-up worth it? Find out for yourself and see the biggest fight of the century unfold on May 2. Watch as two exemplary fighters show their boxing prowess and delight boxing fans as Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao goes head to head with Floyd “Money” Mayweather.
