Massachusetts Woman Sues Alleging Zofran Forced Termination

ZofranLegal.com has reported on a new Zofran case in which a woman has sued GlaxoSmithKline, alleging that the pharmaceutical giant's drug caused her to have to terminate her pregnancy. This is just one of the many lawsuits against GlaxoSmithKline, based on a number of studies indicating the possible association between the drug and congenital defects in children whose mothers had taken Zofran to treat morning sickness.

This new lawsuit cites a summary of the existing epidemiology studies revealing a 2.37 times increased risk of cleft palate, 2 times increase risk of heart defect, and a 20% increased risk of any birth defect. The complainant, a woman from Randolph, Massachusetts, is the first to sue for a terminated pregnancy, which she alleges was caused by taking Zofra in her first trimester of pregnancy as an aid for intense levels of morning sickness.

In this complaint, the woman seeks to be compensated for her emotional and physical distress as she was forced to terminate her pregnancy upon the discovery of life threatening birth defects in her child. The baby died on October 16, 2013 while still in utero, and was described as having severe deformities of the abdomen, allegedly due to the use of the morning sickness drug. She believes that Zofran had been the proximate cause of the deformations in the fetus' abdomen and claims that she has ongoing severe pain and distress as a result of her loss.

As of April 2015, GlaxoSmithKline has had seven lawsuits filed against them due to alleged birth defects of children. The current Zofran cases suggest that the drug causes abdominal malformations, aortic bicuspid stenosis, facial dysmorphia, kidney malformations, clubbed feet, and other extreme defects.
